Context for Colorado State House Scandal

The saga started in April when Republican Rep. Ryan Armagost, a member of the Workplace Harassment Committee, secretly took a photo of Democratic state Rep. Yara Zokaie and shared it to a group chat with fellow Republican lawmakers. Some on the chat ridiculed Zokaie.

Ultimately, the photo was shared to social media where it elicited a string of vulgar comments and, Zokaie says, even threats of rape, “And the worst… a message with my kids’ school address that read, ‘I know what time pickup is, what’s about to happen to them is your fault.’ My kids are 8, 6, and 2.”

Armagost resigned from the state Legislature in August before he could be censured.

Zokaie not only chastised Armagost but accused Minority Leader, Rose Pugliese, of trying to protect him, which Pugliese denied. Lawmakers from both parties traded accusations about who did what and who knew what and when.

In September, Colorado lawmakers passed a nearly unanimous resolution condemning Armagost, with two Republicans casting the only no votes. On the same day, Rose Pugliese announced her resignation as both House minority leader and state representative.
