Nasty Politics: The Impact of Negativity in Political Discourse
Voters may claim to dislike nasty politics but it often grabs their attention and can even signal toughness
In our latest podcast episode, we examine a topic that has become all too prevalent in today's political landscape: nasty politics. From heated debates to social media skirmishes, the tone of political discourse seems to have reached new levels of acrimony.
We explored the underlying factors driving this trend and its potential implications for our democracy. I was thrilled to get a chance to speak Dr. Thomas Zeitzoff, the author of “Nasty Politics: The Logic of Insults, Threats, and Incitement.” Zeitzoff is an expert on political violence and political psychology, who has extensively researched the impact of negativity in politics.
Nasty politics encompasses a range of behaviors, from insults and smears to conspiracy theories and threats of violence. While some may argue that these tactics are effective in persuading voters, Dr. Zeitzoff's research suggests otherwise. While nasty politics may grab attention, it does not necessarily sway voters. In fact, voters generally express distaste for such tactics. However, in times of perceived threat or uncertainty, some individuals may be drawn to politicians who employ nasty rhetoric as a signal of toughness.
The broader implications of nasty politics include the erosion of trust in institutions and the stability of democratic systems. It is crucial to recognize the impact of negativity in politics and strive for a more civil and constructive discourse.
As engaged citizens committed to the principles of democracy, it's crucial for us to confront the challenges posed by nasty politics head-on. By staying informed, open-minded, and actively involved in our communities, we can work towards building a healthier and more resilient democracy for future generations.
I invite you to check out this thought-provoking discussion and join the conversation. Together, we can navigate the complexities of modern politics and strive to create a more united and equitable society.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to promoting positive change.
Sincerely,
David Beckemeyer

New This Week in Outrage Episode!
It’s everything the Outrage Overload podcast is not. It’s not edited. It’s not scripted. It’s lightly researched. It’s David and Lisa talking about this week in outrage, what was in the news, in the memes, and maybe finding some backstory with a humorous (at least to us) twist.
¡Viva Cinco de Mayo! 🎉🌮🇲🇽 - 5-5-2024
This week, Lisa and David talk about George Santos revives his drag queen persona on Cameo; Trump's false claim that he is not allowed to testify; the Good Liars had trouble finding young republicans at “Young Republican” rally; Cicadas spotted in Arkansas; Kentucky Derby; Cinco de Mayo history; Gérard Depardieu arrested on sexual assault allegations; f…
Sounds like a lot of overlap with negativity bias! Excited to listen to the episode.
